What this blog is about
Four topics, mostly. Pricing creative work — figuring out what your rate actually needs to be, how to talk about it without flinching, and when to raise it. Getting paid on time — deposits, payment terms, follow-ups, and the small polite systems that turn "I'll pay you next week" into money in your account. Deposits and contracts — the plain-English clauses that protect the work you agreed to do without making you sound like a lawyer. And the business side of freelancing — bookkeeping, taxes, contracts for collaborators, and the moments where the admin side becomes the thing standing between you and the work you actually want to do.
Who this is for
Photographers, musicians, filmmakers, designers, animators, and anyone else who trades creative work for money. If you send invoices, chase payments, or wonder whether you priced a job correctly — you're in the right place.
What you won't find here
You won't find hype, invented statistics, or productivity hacks with no real-world backing. You won't find "10 ways to double your income in 30 days." You won't find AI-generated fluff. Everything published here is either something we've done ourselves at Balboa Recording, something we've watched go wrong for friends and clients, or something we've quietly changed our own process because of.
How often
Not a schedule. When there's something useful to say, we write it and publish. When there isn't, we don't. This blog will grow slowly and honestly rather than filling up with content for its own sake.
